Three Pretty and Productive Dahlias to Add to Your Garden This Year

I have been growing dahlias for the better part of 10 years now. Each season, I grow at least a dozen unique varieties ranging in shape and size from small ball and pompom to large cactus and dinnerplate. While I am no expert, I have tried a lot in my quest to produce the most beautiful and prolific dahlias, and in turn learned a lot along the way.

One thing I know all too well is how disappointing it can be to spend money and time on a bulb(s) that turns out little yield. For that reason, I am sharing with you my top 3 tried-and-true dahlias.

Blizzard: Blizzard is a beloved pure white dahlia that blooms early and often. Blizzard is categorized as a petite bloom at about 4″, however, I find them big enough to hold their own in arrangements. In addition, these plants produce exceptionally long stems, which makes them fantastic for cutting. Given its height, Blizzard does need to be staked, but the extra effort is well worth the reward.

Sweet Nathalie: I love Sweet Nathalie for its gorgeous variegated blush and cream tones. It will play well with any peach, pink, white, or even yellow flower in your garden. Both the plant and the resulting blooms are categorized as medium-size; easy to tuck in. I am usually pretty generous with sharing my flowers, but this one is so special, I tend to keep her all to myself.

Cornel Red: A true classic. I love seeing these in my garden, come late August when I am craving the deeper, richer hues that Fall brings. With long stems and symmetrical petals, these buds are made to be displayed. Cornel Red is a long-lasting variety that will bloom from mid-summer to your first frost.

I hope you try at least one of these varieties in your garden this summer!
