For several years now, I have had Deer Mountain Inn, in Tannersville, NY bookmarked as a “must-visit” location in the Catskill Mountains. I finally had the opportunity to sneak away last week for a short, winding, roadtrip through a canopy of foliage, ending at the Inn. To say that this experience lived up to my expectations is an understatement. It far, far, exceeded them, in fact.
The space itself is a gorgeous – sumptuous even – mix of dark wood paneling, lush textiles, and highly curated artwork and objects. The works on display here are an ode to “19th century artists of the early Hudson River School”. Each room at the Inn is replete with an educational art guide, which includes suggestions for thoughtful [artist-driven] day trips throughout the area. I left here wanting to scour local antique stores for nature-inspired oil paintings and intricate “Tramp Art” wooden picture frames (See the closeup, below.).
In addition to the accommodations, the service at the Inn was exceptional. Every staff member I encountered was generous, warm, and helpful. Whether inquiring about a hiking trail (of which there are several on the 168-acre property), or a service, the team was ready-and-willing to assist. The attention to detail here certainly extends beyond the decor.
This was even more apparent when dining at the Inn. The in-house restaurant is revered in the area and was bustling with guests and locals alike on a Monday evening. It’s no wonder then that the proprietors describe the space as a “community living room”. There was no shortage of golden hour glow in said “living room”, with a candy-colored sunset creeping in through the open french doors and numerous windows, and a small oil lamp placed on every table. Throughout the Inn, candlelight abounds.
When it comes to the food itself, everything was beautifully plated and delicious as can be. The Steelhead Trout is a standout menu item, and as accompaniments, Logan’s Sourdough Focaccia and the fresh-cut fries are not to be missed! You can find the full dinner menu here.
Tucking myself into bed after a leisurely dinner – in very luxurious linens, no less – I felt deeply satiated in more ways than one. Deer Mountain Inn is nothing short of magic. I loved every last detail of my stay.
