Come with Me to Cut Tulips at North Star Orchards

One of the things I have always tried to do in this space – and am aiming to do more of in the future – is share what Central/Upstate New York has to offer. Whether you are passing through, or are a local looking for something unique to do, I genuinely hope that I can provide some inspiration.

North Star Orchards, located in Westmoreland (a short drive from the Thruway stop), is a family run farm market & bakery that I visit at least once a week. It is somewhat surprising then that I have never cut tulips here before – until this year. Cutting start dates are determined by the temperature and amount of sunshine we have – but in general begin in late April/early May. The team at North Star plants 75,000 (!!!) new bulbs every fall for this very reason. If you plan on cutting, I recommend bringing your own snips in addition to a water-filled bucket or vessel to hold your flowers.

Come with me to see the patch!

It is approximately a half-mile walk round-trip through the apple orchard to reach the patch. There are several pretty stretches of Daffodils along the way, as well.

These cute tulip (but also, heart-like!) signposts are placed along the path. I love them.

Here we are! The patch is laid out in a large circle, grouped by color and variety. There are so many beautiful blooms to choose from!

If you are looking for a photo-op, there are ample opportunities amongst the tulips, or around several “props” placed at the perimeter of the field. There were three families present when I visited, and they were all taking advantage of the scenery and the bluebird day we were having!

And…If you would prefer to visit the store (without the walk), there are fresh cut bouquets available for purchase. I was tempted by them, even with my own flowers in hand! Enjoy!
